Puppy Orientation

Description

Konfident Kanines offers an innovative alternative to puppy classes in the form of an in-home puppy orientation to anyone who has a new puppy. This induction is designed to assist and equip puppy parents to better understand their puppy and learn what to do, or not to do, in order to minimize problems, while at the same time properly preparing the puppy for formal education (training) at or near six months of age.

The primary reason for providing this private and concentrated in-home orientation is that at KKI we understand that puppies less than 5 or 6 months of age have a very limited attention span. Experience has taught us that attempting to teach such a young puppy in increments of more than just a few minutes at a time in an environment with other puppies milling about is really not very effective, and might even be considered unfair to the puppy as well as the owner.

This however does not mean that puppies cannot be taught some very basic and important fundamental exercises when in a controlled environment. Our orientation will provide you with all the information you will need to prepare your puppy for formal obedience training once their attention span has sufficiently developed usually around the age of 5 – 6 months, or around the time they exchange their baby teeth for adult teeth.

We will also discuss in detail the very common topic of “puppy socialization”. Once again it is our opinion that there is far too much emphasis placed on puppy socialization in general and not nearly enough focus placed on proper or constructive socialization. Often we might hear that a dog with undesirable behaviors behaves so due to a lack of socialization when in fact far too often the puppy was socialized, but was subjected to inappropriate socialization. Socialization in itself can often be detrimental to a puppy’s development if it is not done properly.

This in-home presentation takes up approximately one hour or slightly longer depending on the number of questions the family may have. Some of what will be explained and/or demonstrated in detail during this orientation, complete with the reasons behind them include but are not limited to;

  • How puppies learn
  • Crate training
  • Nipping
  • Chewing
  • Barking
  • Jumping up
  • Food or resource guarding
  • Teaching a puppy not to take food without approval
  • Door manners
  • Effective House training techniques
  • Meaningful socialization
  • Puppies & Dog Parks
  • Introduction to a leash
  • Leashes and collars – Pros and Cons
  • Grooming
  • Children and puppies
  • Simple & Fun training tips
  • The early warning signs of potential aggressive tendencies

We are well prepared to assist you in identifying and effectively addressing and any early warning signs of undesirable aggression. Often, the better quality of the dog, the more likelihood there is of this same dog becoming dominant and even aggressive towards humans if these early warning signs are not properly identified and addressed at an early stage of development.

The benefits of Konfident Kanines personalized puppy orientation session is without limits. Not only has this detailed introduction to a puppy’s initial education proven to be successful, it is also cost effective and will fit into almost anyone’s schedule. When we want the very best education for ourselves or our children we seek out individual tutoring – why not do the same for your puppy.

Our new book written by Larry Neilson, A Comprehensive Guide to Puppies Surviving the First Six Months is included for the perfect compliment to the Puppy Orientation session.
